What are some of the reasons for drug dependency?
-

Women who use drugs, for the most part, have either been forced into using them, such as in the case of some prostitutes, who develop a dependency due to the nature of their work, after being introduced to the drug by a pimp or a customer. Or, the women have faced sexual abuse or spousal abuse and resort to drugs to escape the misplaced feeling of shame those results.
What is the most effective way to help a woman with a drug dependency?
Drug dependency for women, due to it's causes, is different from that of men. Research has proven that women benefit most from a program that provides comprehensive services and meets their basic needs. This includes:
• Access to food, clothing and shelter
• Transportation to and from the clinic, rehabilitation centre or nursing home
• Legal assistance and counselling
• Educational opportunities, literacy training and skill building programs
• Medical care and attention
• Child care, so that they can focus on themselves
• Assertiveness training
• Psychological assessment and mental health care
• Support and counselling from a 'friendly' advisor
Research also shows that for women, a continued relationship with a treatment provider is important to the success of the treatment. This continuity and familiarity is a stabilizing force that helps depose drug dependency for women.

Involving the family is an important step in successful treatment. Parents, spouse, children should be advised to be encouraging rather than judgemental, and should be warned of behavioural symptoms that may lead to, or indicate a relapse. Women in particular need the help and strength of those closest to them during a period of struggle. Community education is another important aspect of treatment of drug dependency, for women need a safe and welcoming environment within which they can fight their addiction.
